Well, you’ve been working for a while now, and you think you need a break, and want to go for a trek. But which trekking location should you head for? Take the following factors into account, and we’re sure you’ll have your answer by the end!
How fit are you? Ideally, you should be fit for any trek. Work out a month in advance in order to make sure you’re prepared.
If you’re in good shape, then most treks can be undertaken by you. Even Kuari Pass can be done by trekkers who don’t have that much experience, yet are fit.
3. Weather and Season
Most Himalayan treks like Hampta Pass and Kashmir’s Great Lakes are doable in May and June, but there are some treks that are known for the particular seasons they thrive in. If you’re going in April, think of Chopta-Chandrashila. The rhododendrons are in full bloom at Chopta and the route to Tungnath, and you might even encounter some ice and snow near Chandrashila top!

Come July and August, and the famous Valley of Flowers beckons you. The flowers are in full bloom, and monsoon treks hold a charm of their own.
September, October, and November, though cold, are the best months for catching a view of the snow capped peaks. The skies are at their clearest, so I’d recommend Nag Tibba or Kuari Pass.
Come December and January, and we have the classic winter treks, namely Kedarkantha, and the Chadar trek.
4. Number Of Days At Hand
How many days do you have? If it’s a long weekend trip, then something like Kheerganga and Bhrigu Lake may be more up your alley.
But if you have a good week to 10 days, go for a trek like Roopkund in Uttarakhand, or the Great Lakes in Kashmir.
For something in between, try Chandrakhani Pass near Manali!
If you’ve got a humble amount saved up, then Piang Neru or Khar Myundari may be just what you’re looking for!
If you’re a beginner to trekking, here are 10 trekking tips that should help you prepare for your first trek! And even if you’re experienced, it’s never too late to brush up on some information.
Trekking Tip 1: Double check everything.
Equipment matters. You don’t want to be out on a hike, and when you need something important, you don’t have it. It can be the difference between life and death. Trekking usually takes place in remote locations, where facilities are scarce, so there’s a good chance you won’t find what you’re looking for.
Even if it is available, why would you want to waste money and buy something you already have?
Trekking Tip 2: If hit by AMS, descend.
Mountains can be your best friend, but also your worst enemy. Acute Mountain Sickness hits when you don’t acclimatise properly. Presuming you’re past the point of acclimatising and are already facing symptoms of altitude sickness, the best solution is to descend. While Diamox etc. can help curb the symptoms and effects, removing the cause(high altitude) is the most logical solution.
Trekking Tip 3: Prepare adequately.
Make sure you’re physically and mentally fit to go for a trek. Fitness can make the difference between making a trek really easy to complete, or really difficult to manage. You don’t want to be left lagging behind!
Trekking Tip 4: Climb high, sleep low.
Once over 3000 meters above sea level, climb slowly, sleeping no more than 300 m higher at the end of each day. Going higher during the day is fine as long as you go down to sleep. It’s a good idea to reach your destination for the day and then go for an acclimatisation walk somewhere high around, thereafter returning to camp.
Trekking Tip 5: Start early, reach early.
It’s a rule I follow religiously. Early morning usually makes for glorious weather, with astounding views. Plus, if you start by around 5 or 6 AM, there’s a good chance you’ll be at your intended destination by 12 PM or max, 2, just in time for lunch. Plus, the weather usually gets cloudy and rainy post noon, and it’s never fun to trek in that.
Trekking Tip 6: Leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but photos. Kill nothing but time. Keep nothing but memories.
Global warming is consuming our planet at a rapid pace, and the Himalayas have one of the most fragile ecosystems in the world. Add to all this, the throngs of tourists visiting them each year, and you have at hand a disaster waiting to happen.
In light of all these, it is our prerogative that we keep our ecological footprint to a minimum. We leave them as we would like to find them. We do not harm the flora and fauna. We take away nothing but experiences.
Trekking Tip 7: It’s always further than it looks. It’s always taller than it looks. And it’s always harder than it looks.
This one applies to both trekking and mountaineering. If we keep wasting time thinking about how much further the destination is, we make it mentally tiring for ourselves. So it’s best to concentrate on the next step, on the immediate present, and where to put our foot next.
Trekking Tip 8: Take care of your feet.
Your legs and feet are your most valuable companion on any trek, and that’s why it’s really important to pay attention to them. Make sure to wear the right socks, and the right number of layers. Break in new shoes before taking them for their first trek. Get comfortable in them. Lace them up to the top to reduce chances twisting your ankle.
Trekking Tip 9: When you reach a destination, set up camp first before anything else.
Before doing anything else, it’s necessary that you pitch your tents first. When you do that, you have a base to function out of, out of which you can organise all other activities like cooking. In the event of unforeseen weather, you have a place to take shelter.
Trekking Tip 10: “Aur kitni aage hai?/How much further?” is always a bad question to ask, and one we hate answering 😛
We all know “Bas thoda aur/just 10 minutes more” is a blatant lie we tell just to keep you satisfied, so why make us say it 😛 ?
We recently interviewed Kratika Jain, a digital marketer from Ahmedabad. In a candid chat, she tells us about her first time trekking experiences to Hampta Pass in July. Read on!
Q: How did you start trekking?
A: Actually, this was my first time trekking, and it all happened rather quickly. Quite a lot of my friends were doing it, and I couldn’t handle their pictures, it was too beautiful, and I really needed a break from my job as well! The satisfaction of the mountains couldn’t be felt in a city like Ahmedabad, and I really wanted to get away. So I quickly opened up Google and started looking for a trek to do.
Q: How did you end up choosing Hampta Pass?
A: I simply searched which trek was popular during July, and Hampta Pass popped up!
Q: What was Hampta Pass like, for you?
A: It was easy to moderate, even though it was my first time trekking, but the last two days were quite difficult(during the pass crossing and descending). Even the day we crossed Hampta Pass, we walked for 12 hours. I thought to myself, “Oh shit I’m killing myself !”, but looking back when we finished it, it was a really nice experience, and at that point, I realised that we(the group) had actually done something exciting in life!
Q: How did it feel when you reached the pass itself?
A: Actually, I wasn’t feeling that good, since there was still some portion of the trek remaining. When I reached the pass, I was jubilant, but then thought “Oh shit, abhi aur chalna hai(I still have to walk more!)”.
Then, on the final day, my feelings were the exact opposite and I was thinking “Oh damn, it’s the last day”, and then we felt like it was too short, we wished it was longer. Suddenly all my energy came back that day and we wished we could do it all over again!
Q: Sounds like it was quite a task managing the trek. What inspired you to keep walking?
A: You see so much natural beauty and variations in weather, which you would not get to see in a crowded city like Ahmedabad. The scenery is amazing and beautiful, sometimes it’s flowers, mountains, waterfalls, sometimes it’s rivers. It all inspires you to keep going!
Q: Speaking of rivers, how’d you find the river crossing at Jwara?
A: At first, I felt like not doing it, then I felt a lot of adrenalin during the actual crossing itself, and then I felt like doing it again! It was adventurous, but thankfully I was never scared.
Q: Once you cross Hampta Pass, you come to Spiti and Chandra Tal. How did you like those?
A: It was absolutely beautiful! I had never seen mountainous landscapes, especially since it was my first time trekking. My immediate reaction was “Why don’t they shoot Bollywood movies here? Why do people go abroad to countries like Thailand? Spiti is equally, if not more beautiful”. The truth is, Himachal is really unexplored. That is because of its inaccessibility. But it is this same inaccessibility that allows this region to remain peaceful, calm, and serene. By contrast, we saw Rohtang Pass on the way back, and wahan pe to mela laga hua tha!
Q: Being an Indian woman, was there any hurdle you faced while informing your family about going for the trek?
A: I just told my family, don’t wait for me, agar mai waapis nahi aayi! They were asking for a phone number to contact me in case of an emergency, and were shocked to learn ke waahaan pe signal hi nahi aata. They could not comprehend that there are still regions in this country jahaan pe signal nahi aata! All jokes aside, they were mostly fine, they just wanted me to stay in touch, since it was my first time trekking.
Q: Was there any particular event from the trek which stood out for you?
A: The truth is, I wasn’t in a good condition, and desperately wanted a break from my life. I wanted to move out of the city and go to the mountains. So this trek was a big break for me, and genuinely a life changing experience, which I felt I needed. So I would describe the entire trek as an event that stood out for me. To top it all, the Renok staff were really nice and supportive. The group members too were very cooperative. Some of the group members and guides are now friends of mine!
Q:Do you have any advice for first time trekkers?
A: What I witnessed on the trek was that people were scared of the altitude, saying “No, mujhse nahi hoga(I will not be able to do it), I can’t do this” etc. If we keep this sort of mindset, we will not be able to concentrate on the trek and enjoy it, enjoy the scenery all around. For those for whom it’s their first time trekking, I have to say this. We should soak in every moment, because every moment is unique, memorable and enjoyable, and we should not forget this in our tiredness!
Q: Finally, has this trek had any lasting effects on you?
A: Apart from being in touch with all the group members, I have realised a lot of things about the mountains.
Trekking is not boring, ever, and it probably won’t be for anyone. Anyone can go for it, people from all walks of life, age, etc., so everyone can disconnect from their individual backgrounds and connect together to the mountains. Trekking also helps you get to know yourself as a person, and nothing can be better than staying with nature.
I felt so much positivity when I returned from Hampta Pass, it’s been life-changing for me. Whenever I’m faced with a negative situation in life, I think of the mountains, and I channel positivity through them into me.
When I returned from Hampta, I kept telling my family and friends the tales of my trek, and now they’ve started to grow bored! Even now, I am in the same mood, dreaming of the mountains. Ab to keeda lag gaya hai(I’m hooked to the mountains now), to trek once or twice during the year.

Kedarkantha Terrific Snow Trek for Beginners
With the advent of the New Year, I, like a billion other people, decided to turn my life around this year. And what better way to do that, than escaping right into the lap of Mother Nature i.e. The Himalayas to break free from my boring, mechanized, city life and rejuvenate. Because of my quest for adventure and unforgettable experiences, and my lack of trekking experience, The Kedarkantha trek seemed like the perfect option. The Kedarkantha trek is a 6 days and 5 night’s round trip trek which starts and ends at Dehradun. The difficulty level of the trek is moderate and is a great option for all those who do not have much experience trekking. Kedarkantha is a beautiful rounded peak situated in the picturesque tons river valley. It is located in the Singtur range of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, India and is elevated at a height of 3800 meters above the sea level.
DAY 1: I was travelling from Delhi with a few friends but we were lucky enough to meet some of our trek mates on the train itself which gave us more time to interact before the trek began. Upon reaching Dehradun, we easily found the Cab that was to take us to the camp site at Sankri. The drive was absolutely beautiful and gave us a taste of what lies ahead. Driving along the tons river was definitely a highlight of the trip. Upon reaching Sankri we were divided into groups and allocated our tents for the night.
DAY 2: The next day of Kedarkantha trek we began with a 6 AM wake up call, followed by super fun exercise session. Today was a little cloudy and the entire setting looked straight out of a travel magazine. (One of those 1000 things to do before you die articles) After a heavy breakfast of cornflakes, masala chai and paranthas, we began our trek at 8 AM sharp. We trekked through dense pine forests with some sensational views. Our Kedarkantha trekking instructor familiarized us with several techniques to minimize breaks and reaching the next camp site in time. From spotting wild boars, hares and langoors to drinking the sweetest water from the brooks, this day gave us memories that we will cherish forever. Upon trekking for a few more hours we reached our next camp site at Juda ka Talab. As the sun set and the stars came up over this picturesque view of snow clad mountains and the lake in the centre, we made our tents and food. Although I should’ve been exhausted from all the walking and trekking, sleep did not come to me for a long time. I kept thinking about this poem by Sanober khan:
“I do not want to sleep,
For fear I might miss the twinkle of the brightest star.
For fear I may never know,
How the moon glimmers in the darkest hour.”
DAY 3: I woke up early in the morning to see the magical sunrise at the Juda ka Talab with the golden glow spreading over the snow clad peaks and reflecting over the lake spreading warmth all over the clearing. A morning this beautiful always makes me retrospect, makes my city life problems seem so trivial, and makes me want to believe in a god for only he could’ve thought of something as divine as this. Today was a comparatively lighter day. We were given ample amount of time to enjoy and explore the wilderness. Being a photography enthusiast I managed to get some fantastic shots of the scenic beauty around me. After a lunch of delicious dal chawal and Aaloo Sabji, prepared by our cook Mr. Atar Singh ji (with our help of course), we trekked for 4 hours to reach the next campsite that is the Kedarkantha base camp.
DAY 4: Today, after an early breakfast, we started trekking to summit the Kedarkantha peak. We cleared several meadows covered in gorgeous wild flowers and grazing cattle. Despite the exhaustion, the feeling of summiting a peak is so exquisite, that it almost instantaneously filled us with energy. The mountain was summited with the 15 of us running full speed towards the top, yelling on top of our lungs! The view from the peak was, for lack of a better word, DREAMY! We had the best lunch of our lives in this mesmerizing setting of snow clad peaks around us and only the sound of our laughter filling the air. After observing, exploring and photographing this peak, we spend the night camping at the base.
DAY 5: We followed a stone market trail in Hargaon which led us to a dense pine and walnut forest. The minute we entered the forest, all our senses were heighten. We could smell the fresh fragrance of the leaves, we could hear the birds chirping, I also spotted a carcass of a wild boar I think! The walk was always accompanied by the jokes and funny banter between us. We got a few glimpses of the Har-ki-dun valley also and spent the night at Sankri.
Day 6: This was the last day of the trek and we were driving back from Sankri to Dehradun. We had to say our goodbye’s to our trek instructors here only. As we drove through the same scenic road between Sankri and Dehradun, I thought of how many changes I see in myself in only 6 days. Everything from my appearance to my thought process has changed drastically. The air in the bus was filled with hope. Hope of staying in touch, hope of meeting again in the future, hope of having many more such life altering experiences! It was indeed my best new year’s resolution..YET.

Itinerary for The Leh Ladakh Tour from Srinagar
Kargil Day 1 Drive from Srinagar to Kargil Leh Ladakh Tour from Srinagar starts.
Today we start Leh Ladakh Tour from Srinagar via Zozila Pass, our first Leg of our grand Leh Ladakh Tour from Srinagar to Leh stopping at Kargil for a night. We cross the Zozila Pass (3528 m) and Drass (3350 m) the second most coldest inhibited place in world. Upon arrival at camp Kargil check in at camp and enjoy the evening tea then we will explore the camp surroundings.
Leh Day 2 Kargil to Leh.
We leave early in the morning for Leh, through Namik la and Fotu La. Lunch at Khaltse and after Lunch we drive to Leh passing through Magnetic hill, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib & Confluence of river Indus and Zanskar. Upon arrival in Leh check into the hotel and take complete rest to get acclimatized to High altitude.
Leh Day 3 Sightseeing around Leh
Today is rest day and acclimatization day to the high altitude of Ladakh. To enjoy your Leh Ladakh tour acclimatization to high altitude is very important. Have your breakfast in your hotel and take complete rest to acclimatize to the Ladakh high altitude unique environment in evening we will have briefing session about the trip.
Nubra Valley Day 4 Leh to Nubra Valley
After an early breakfast we start our Leh Ladakh Tour, we drive to Nubra Valley through the Khardungla- Pass (the highest motorable road in the world at 18,390 ft). Nubra Valley is popularly known as Ldorma (LUDMRA) or the Valley of Flowers. It is situated to the North of Ladakh between the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges of the Himalayas. We explore this beautiful valley and the villages and monasteries surrounding it. Overnight stay at beautiful homestay managed by local Ladakhi family. Enjoy the delicious dinner prepared by them and all ingredients sourced from their own farm which surrounds their beautiful home.
Nubra Valley to Leh Day 5
After breakfast at the camp, we visit the sand dunes in the Nubra valley and enjoy a small camel safari. Later we drive back to Leh. In the evening you can either rest or take a walk to the local market with us. Overnight at hotel.
Pangong Lake Day 6 Drive from Leh to Pangong Lake.
After an early breakfast we leave for Pangong Lake through Changla pass (5486 Mtrs). Pangong lake, situated at 14,000 feet (4,267 m) is a long narrow basin of inland drainage, hardly six to seven kilometres at its widest point and over 130km long . The picturesque lake is bisected by the international border between India and China. We spend the night on the shores of this beautiful Lake with the Milky Way to keep us company.
Leh Day 7 Pyongang Lake to Leh
Today we drive back to Leh enroute visiting Thiksey Monastery (An impressive complex rising tier upon tier on a hill above the village). Overnight stay in Leh.
Departure Day 8 We depart from Leh

Day 1 Shimla serves as major bus link from all metros and from Shimla it takes two hour to reach Narkanda. Check in to hotel/camp and explore the surrounding area one can also go to Karena peak for acclimatizing trek. Briefing about the Hatu Peak trek and enjoy the bonfire under the open sky.
Narkanda: situated at an attitude of 2708 meters on the Hindustan Tibet Road (NH – 22), Narkanda offers a spectacular view of snowclad mountain ranges. Initial trek is through the thick forest and after trekking for about 3 kms you get the uninterrupted views of Himalayan mountain range. Hatu peak top is a vantage point gives you panoramic views of The Great Himalayan Range and you can visit sacred Hatu Mata Temple. After spending quality time at the top trek back and relax in hotel.
Day 3 After break fast drive towards Shimla for your onward journey.

Understanding the theory part is as important as doing it at the ski slopes and after the class we will go actual skiing. Its takes time to get used to walk on snow with Ski’s and its different experience altogether. During your practice you will fall, roll, bang and have lot of fun in fresh snow. We will end our day with trying few moves with Ski and Ski Sticks to see how much you utilized your day.
Auli Skiing Day 03: Learn to Maneuver with Ski
After first day’s practice you will gain confidence to walk over the snow with skis but today is the day to learn maneuvering over the fantastic Auli Snow Ski Slopes. Learn how to move forward with ski and applying breaks on your own. Once getting the hands on experience practice is the key to bring the perfection. Discuss with team mates today’s learning over the lunch breaks.
Auli Skiing Day 04: Skiing lessons – Practice Practice & Practice
Practice what you learnt over the flat snow surface and once you gain confidence then move to gentle slopes. Learn to move forward with ski stick and apply brakes. Once your instructors is convinced about your progress you can move to advance slopes where you will gain a good speed and it will be the test for your maneuvering techniques.
Auli Skiing Day 05: Practice at Advance Slopes
Today is the last of our course and it’s time to test your newly learned skiing skills at advance slopes. Advance slopes are much longer with high gradient. Sweat it out under the wathcfull eye of your ski instructor and enjoy the day to the fullest. In the evening we will have a graduation ceremony where certificate of achievement will be honored.
Auli Skiing Day 06: Return to Haridwar
After an extensive learning experience its time to head back to Haridwar for your onward journey. We are sure even in your dream you will practice the moves which you learned over these days in Auli.

DEPARTURES (All departures for The Khuliya Top Trek are ex Kathgodam)
Arrive at Kathgodam Railway station and start the scenic drive to Munsiyari. Munsiyari is a small town located at an altitude of 2250 Metres (7380 Feet) above from sea level in Pithoragarh district and about 290 Kms from Kathgodam. Drive to Munsiyari from Kathgodam is scenic one. One can see various trees of Chir, Deodar, Pine, Oak and rhododendrons. You pass through Almora, Bageshwar Kausani, Choukhori and Thal check it out. The road winds itself all the way up to Kalamuni top at a height of 9027 ft before descending into the glorious Munsiyari valley surrounded by snowcapped peaks.
Day 02: Trek from Munsyari to Bhujani (10000Ft.)
The trek to Bhujani is 4 kms takes about 5 hours. We walk through rhododendron and oak forests and climb up to 10000 ft. The trek to Bhujani is a steep and gradual climb to the campsite. The Bhirti falls enroute is an added attraction. The campsite is amidst the oak forests with the stunning view of Panchachuli peak. You can experience the thrill of Valley crossing half up the trek. Overnight camp at Bhujani.
Day 03: Trek from Bhujani to Khalia Top (11500Ft.)
The trek to Khalia Top is 6 kms long and takes 5 hours. As you leave Bhujani the open sky with vast meadows beckon you. Khalia top is a vast meadow in the Kumaon Himalayas and it offers a panoramic 360 degree view of the mountain ranges and the snowline that covers them. Overnight camp at Khalia top.
Day 04: Khalia to Balanti (9600 Ft.)
The descend from Khalia top to Balanti is gradual. Once you leave the skyline the oak forest surrounds you and the greater Himalayan ranges loom ahead in front. Overnight camp at Balanti.
Day 05: Drive from Balanti to Kathgodam
From Balanti the road head is 2 kms walk and takes about 2 hours to reach and you drive back to Kathgodam. Reach Kathgodam in the evening take return transport for your onward journey.
Bhrigu Lake trek is a short trek near Manali which takes you to pristine lake Bhrigu Lake located at an elevation of around 4,300 metres (14,100 ft) in Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh. It is located to the east of Rohtang Pass and is around 6 kilometres from Gulaba village.

Day 1: Drive from Manali to Gulaba and trek upto Rohli Khel (9500ft)
We will meet at Manali Mall bus stand at 9:00 AM and start the drive to Gulaba village the base of Bhrigu Lake trek. After quick briefing session we will start the Bhrigu Lake trek. The Bhrigu Lake Trek start through apple orchard and dense forest of Deodar and Pine trees and after few hours of the trek the stunning vistas the Kullu Valley welcomes you. After 5 hours of trek we reach our today’s campsite of Rohli Khel. Overnight stay in tents.
Day 2: Trek from Rohli Khel to Bhrigu (14000ft)
After an early morning sumptuous breakfast, we begin our trek to Bhrigu Lake and few hours of trekking enjoying the views which Bhrigu Lake Trek offers we cross a stream and start ascending a ridge after crossing it you reach the Brighu Lake. After spending some quality time we return back or proceed further to Pandu Ropa campsite.
Day 3: Trek from Panduropa to Vashisht
After breakfast, we start our downhill trek through a small meadow towards ridge with steep descend to reach Vashisht where you can take bath at famous hot sulphur springs. We drive back to Manali. Our trek ends with mosaic of beautiful memories.
