Where is Kedarkantha?

Kedarkantha stands at a height of 12,500 ft and is a majestic peak in the Garhwal Himalayas. To reach Kedarkantha, you have to go through the famous Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. The peak is located at a distance of 10 km from Sankri, which rests on the foothills of the Kedarkantha trekking range. It also serves as a starting point of the trek. Trekkers can reach this village from Dehradun by road.


As mentioned earlier, the trek begins from Sankri which stands at a height of 6,500 ft. So in effect, you will be climbing 6,000 ft uphill to reach the peak. If you complete the trek in 6 days, you will stop at two campsites on your way to Kedarkantha. The first campsite would be Juda Ka Talab, located at a height of 9,000 ft. You can reach this campsite by trekking for 4 km. The second campsite would be Kedarkantha base camp, located at a height of 11,250 ft and at a distance of 4 km from Juda Ka Talab. As you climb upwards, the temperatures will decrease, so do keep that in mind. You can reach the peak from the base camp in a couple of hours. The last stretch is a little difficult to maneuver, but according to experienced trekkers, it is doable.

Kedarkantha weather plays an important role when you plan to go on the trek. Although it is one of the few trekking destinations open throughout the year, you have to consider the weather before you travel. The ideal weather varies from person to person. During these months, the weather can range anywhere between 0 to -7 degree Celsius. It’s worth mentioning that along with snow, you will also have to bear strong winds and slippery slopes. However, you can be sure that you will have one of the best trekking experiences as you make your way through thick snow.

On the other hand, summers also offer trekkers a unique and pleasant experience. From May onwards, the snow begins to melt and the temperatures begin to rise. The average temperature in summers ranges between 15 to 17 degree Celsius. However, you should keep in mind that nights can be colder, and therefore you should carry thermals even during summers. A great thing about Kedarkantha weather in summers is that everything turns completely green. There is an abundance of flora and fauna and the entire trail is dotted with dandelions, rhododendrons, and a variety of Himalayan wildflowers. Only experienced trekkers go to Kedarkantha during the monsoon season. At the end of the day, understanding everything about Kedarkantha weather and then planning your trip will certainly make matters less complicated. You will be prepared for the weather and will have an amazing trekking experience. 

What Summers and Winters Offer?

So if you want to experience Kedarkantha in all its glory, you should trek to the peak during winters. However, you must keep in mind that winters can be extremely harsh. You will have to be prepared to brace the cold, snow, and strong winds. Kedarkantha has wide open meadows where winds are extremely strong. You will have to wear special jackets, thermals, snow boots, which may make trekking difficult. However, if you’re in good health, nothing should stop you.
