Flora and Fauna of Yuksom

Yuksom has been given the title of “Biodiversity hotspot” because of its abundance in natural beauty. The flora is a rich mix of chestnut, oak, maple, birch, magnolia, silver fir and rhododendrons. Rhododendrons are one of the most beautiful and diverse species that you will come across here. The sheer variety of this plant will leave you mesmerized. Also a must-watch here is the rare and endangered Red Panda. Other animals that inhabit the forest are civets, the Himalayan black bear, foxes etc.

The flora and Fauna of Yuksom can be best studied at Kanchenjunga Biosphere reserve (KBR):

Biosphere reserves are the terrestrial and coastal ecosystem, which are internationally recognized within the framework of UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) program.

Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve has rich natural vegetation. The forests in these reserves are full of diverse plant communities, including diverse vegetation. The vegetation here ranges from Sub-Tropical Broad-Leafed Hill Forest, mixed coniferous forests, Himalayan wet temperate forests, Temperate broad-leafed hill forest, sub-alpine forests, moist alpine forests, Temperate broad-leafed forests, and dry alpine forests.

One can also find the following floral species:

  6. Paphiopedilum,
  7. Anustum Orchid

The Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve is a shelter to a large number of mammal and bird species. The biosphere reserve is also a natural habitat to several endangered mammal species. Some of them are:

  2. Leopard Cat,
  3. Panther
  4. Snow Leopard,
  5. Tibetan Wolf,
  6. Clouded Leopard,
  7. Leopard,
  8. Serow,
  9. Red Panda,
  10. Nayan
  11. Himalayan Tahr,
  12. Musk Deer,

 

There are large numbers of bird species in Kanchenjunga National Park. These bird species are resident as well as migratory. Some of these species are considered as critically endangered.

There are about 127 bird species found in this reserve. These bird species also include seven species declared as globally endangered. Following are some of the bird species found in the Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve:

  3. Himalayan bearded-vulture,
  4. Satyr Tragopan,
