Jorethang is a major town in the southern part of the Indian state of Sikkim, situated at an altitude of 980 feet above sea level. It is located in the foothills, below which the Rangeet river, a tributary of the Teesta river flows. It lies on the way to Pelling from Darjeeling, Siliguri, and Kalimpong. Jorethang is well connected by buses and jeeps and is a useful transport hub between West Sikkim, Namchi and Darjeeling/Siliguri.
This town offers sightseeing trekking and river rafting opportunities. One can also plan trips to nearby, lesser-known destinations like Rinchenpong (country getaways) or Reishi (hot springs and holy cave). Jorethang’s most striking feature is the Akar Suspension Bridge. 400m north of this bridge is the passing photogenic roadside Shiva niches of Sisne Mandir on Legship Road.
Every year in January, many tourists and locals from nearby states and towns visit this town due to the Jorethang Maghe Mela, a major event in Jorethang’s calendar. It lasts for about three days starting on the 14th of January. It is celebrated just after all the tasks related to harvesting and replanting winter crops are complete. The mela is said to have evolved from the agricultural fair that was held in Jorethang for the first time in 1955. There are hundreds of stalls selling and exhibiting various products put up for the huge number of people who visit the fair. It is a perfect mix of local culture and modern day entertainment.
There are many options for accommodation and one can find cheap, small eateries near the main marketplace which cater to the needs of tourists.
