A trip to Ladakh region allows you to explore snow-capped mountains, crystal clear lakes, alpine flora and ancient culture. With so many options, it can be overwhelming to include everything. In this post, we’ve tried to shortlist a few popular attractions that you can’t afford to miss. We hope you’d like these choices, and include them in your itinerary for an upcoming trip.

Leh Palace – Best known as Lhachen Palkhar, Leh Palace is synonymous with Ladakh tourism. The dun colours of the landmark form contrast against clear blue skies. The place catches your attention from quite some distance. Built in 1553 by Buddhist Kings, Leh Palace was once the highest building in the world. It’s also popular for a striking resemblance to the Potala Palace, Tibet.

Spending time in the exteriors of the complex allows you to catch stunning views of Ladakh and Stok Kangri mountain ranges. The interiors are adorned with centuries-old paintings and pictures, which also include Tibetan Thangka. In addition to this, you’ll also notice several ceremonial dresses, crowns and jewelry on the walls of the premises.

Pangong Tso Lake – Undoubtedly, this is one of the most popular and best places in Leh-Ladakh. Located 225 km from Leh, it’s the highest saltwater lake in the world. Tourists visit Pangong Tso Lake for photography, camping, bird-watching, sightseeing and mountain biking. In fact, this is one of the most popular spots for overnight camping in the region. During winter season, the lake freezes to give you an opportunity for ice skating and trekking.

Ladakh Tourist Places

Nubra Valley – Located 150 km from Leh, Nubra Valley is one of the iconic attractions in Ladakh region. Popular attractions include Diskit Town, Diskit Monastery, Ensa Gompa, Siachan River and Khardung La Pass. The place is known for a wide range of adventure activities, such as biking safari, trekking, bathing in hot springs etc.

You can also participate in wildlife tours and spot alpine birds, such as common redshank, northern pintail, green sandpiper, black-tailed godwit and Tibetan lark. Bactrian camels are also abundant in the region.

Shanti Stupa, Leh

Shanti Stupa was built to commemorate 2,500 years of Buddhism. Its aim is to promote prosperity and peace in the world. To reach this monument, you need to drive for about 5 km from the airport. With its 500 steps, the complex has a steep climb. While the first level of the structure contains the Dharmachakra and an image of Lord Buddha, the second level depicts Lord Buddha’s various forms.

Khardung La Pass

An image of happy faces at Khardung La Pass is synonymous with Ladakh tourism. The highest motorable pass in the world can be scaled on a jeep or a bike. In fact, this is one of the primary attractions in the valley, and numerous international tourists visit Ladakh for this reason. From October to May, the pass is closed. Giving way to an optical illusion, the hill seems to attract vehicles. The mystery has remained unsolved. In fact, the mystery isn’t limited to vehicles. When water is poured down on the ground, it’s attracted towards the hill. While some people believe that it’s only optical illusion, others claim that the land surrounding the hill has specific properties to cause the phenomenon. Whatever the reason, it’s one of the best places in Leh-Ladakh.

Monasteries instantly catch your attention in Ladakh. The prevalent Tibetan culture can be best seen in some of the most beautiful monasteries dotting the landscape. Apart from Buddhism, most monasteries also depict the legacies of several dynasties and kings to have ruled the region.
