Hampta Pass trek is a beginner’s delight as it has all the components of adventure with easy access. This trek offers diverse landscapes of thick pine forests, vast meadows, adventure-filled river crossings and a high altitude mountain pass. It is named after the village of Hampta. Shepherds and villagers have used this pass to come into Lahaul Spiti valley of Himachal. Traditionally, this was the alternate route between Lahaul and Kullu Valley before the road was built over Rohtang Pass. Hampta Pass is a moderate trek with a possibility of mingling a lot of other adventure activities to suit variable duration and interest of tourists.
The best time to trek the Hampta Pass is from mid-June to mid-October. There is a possibility of witnessing some snow on the high altitude areas in the early days of the trekking season but gradually it melts down completely post monsoon. But the Pass completely changes its face in the winter season and the weather turns extremely harsh.
Hampta Pass Trek in Winters
One of the worst times to trek the Hampta Pass would be the winter season. Hampta Pass in November is tremendously cold and the weather is changeable which makes it unsafe to attempt. Hampta Pass in November is covered with snow, the trekkers seem to avoid this trek due to risk factors associated with narrow roads and slippery ice. Even though the maximum temperature can be 25°C to 26°C during daytime, the temperature goes down at night. The weather can be very unpredictable and can change overnight. The native guides are the best judge of the weather conditions as they change very brusquely on the mountains. This makes the Hampta Pass in November extremely unsafe. Trekkers can go for the Hampta Circle Trek instead of the Hampta Pass in November if they want to experience an adventure.

Best Time for Hampta Pass Trek – Mid June to Mid October
The best time to do Hampta pass is from mid-June to mid-October. Hampta Pass in October is a great time to do this trek but only until the second week. October marks the beginning of Winters and there are chances of snowfall as well, you have clear weather and clear views of high peaks and mountains. No rains, bright sun and cold nights you will get to face when doing Hampta Pass Trek in October. But in the second half of October, Hampta Pass is a dicey terrain there are chances of snowfall and getting struck due to road closure at Rohtang Pass. There is not really heavy snowfall but there is a high chance of snowfall and the weather turns unpredictable.
Temperatures during Hamtpa Pass Trek in October
The temperature in the first half of October is approximately 15°C but the temperature gets as low as – 2°C in the second half of the October. The snow starts coming back and it gets harder to trek due to constriction and narrowing of treks due to the accumulation of snow.
There is much less greenery in Hampta Pass Trek in October and you find more snow patches. In conclusion, October is a dicey time to attempt Hampta Pass trek. If there is no hefty snowfall, you may be able to complete it, but it is sensible to avoid any high Himalayan pass at that time. Most people who try to attempt the Hampta Pass in October will come back from the top instead of descending down to Lahaul, as Rohtang Pass may get shut.
But if you are still adamant and plan to attempt Hampta Pass, make sure you have enough experience in the Himalayan region and local guides.
