What’s the Hemkund Sahib trek distance?

Hemkund Sahib is one of the most sacred religious sites for the Sikh community. Located on the shores of Hemkund Lake, this place marks the union of Guru Gobind Singh with God after years of meditation in the previous birth. The place was described in Guru Gobind Singh’s autobiography, which allowed two devoted Sikhs to discover the place. This scenic religious site has also been talked about in Hindu mythology. According to legends, Lakshman spent some time in Hemkund Sahib.

Hemkund Sahib Trek Distance

Approximately a 20 km trek from Govindghat, Hemkund is a scenic, not-so-difficult trek near the famous Valley of Flowers. The trek starts from Govindghat, which is the gateway to Lakshman Ganga Valley and Bhyundar. In addition to this, Govindghat is also the right place to catch a bus for Badrinath.

On the trek, you come across dense forests of rhododendron and pine trees. Alpine flowers can be seen all around in abundance. You can also notice the flowing waters of river Lakshman Ganga. After a 14 km trek, you reach Ghangaria, the basecamp for Hemkund and Valley of Flowers. From here, it’s a steep 6 km trek to Hemkund Sahib.

On reaching Hemkund, many people are fascinated by the scenic beauty of Hemkund Lake. With a 2 km circumference, the clear water mirrors snowy peaks of Saptarishis. From July to October, you can notice thin ice floating on the surface. The national flower of Uttarakhand, Brahma Kamal, can be seen in the Hemkund Sahib Lake.

How to plan a trek from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib?

One of the most popular religious sites among the Sikh community, Hemkund Sahib is open between the months of May and October. Based on different priorities, people plan a Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib trek during different months. A not-so-difficult trek, it allows you to cross the mesmerizing beauty of the region, which includes waterfalls, streams of rivers, snow clad mountains and glaciers.

Govindghat is well-connected to other parts of Uttarakhand via roads. From Govindghat, you can either plan a 14 km trek to Ghangaria, which is the basecamp, or take mules and dolis. Recently, a helicopter service was also started between Govindghat and Ghangaria. On the last 6 km of the journey, the trek is pretty steep. The scenic beauty of the region makes it worthwhile.

Most people club a Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib trek with Valley of Flowers. To reach Valley of Flowers, you have to come back to Ghangaria, and proceed on a 4 km trek. It’s worth mentioning that a lot of trekkers prefer to visit the valley prior to taking overnight rest in Ghangaria and moving on to Hemkund Sahib. This gives you a chance to do the less tiring Valley of Flowers trek first, before moving on to the harder route.

What’s the Hemkund Sahib temperature in different seasons?

Hemkund Sahib is one of the most sacred Sikh religious sites. Open from May to October, your choice of time to plan your visit will vary on the taste and priorities. Before planning a trek, it’s important to have an understanding of Hemkund Sahib temperature in different seasons.

May to Mid-June

During May, the last 3 km of the 6 km trek from Ghangaria are covered with snow. You can see some beautiful alpine flowers on the way to Hemkund. The average temperature remains between 11 degree celsius to 23 degree celsius. In case you’re clubbing Hemkund with a trek to the Valley of Flowers, please note that you won’t find a good variety of flowers during this period.

Mid-June to Mid-July

In June, the snow starts melting and you can see a fresh bloom. During this period, the average temperature remains between 13 degree celsius to 21 degree celsius.

Mid-July to August End

Since this is the peak season for Valley of Flowers, you will notice a full bloom of the widest variety of alpine flowers. The famous Brahma Kamal can also be seen in the Hemkund Lake during this period. The average temperature remains between 13 degree celsius to 20 degree celsius.

September

Snowy Glaciers - Valley of Flowers

This is probably the best period to visit Hemkund Sahib in terms of weather. However, heavy rains prior to September can make road conditions challenging. The average Hemkund Sahib temperature during this period is 13 degree celsius to 20 degree celsius, skies are clear, monsoon has passed and the Brahma Kamal flower is in full bloom.

How to reach Hemkund Sahib from Ghangaria after visiting Valley of Flowers?

One of the most beautiful and mesmerizing treks, Valley of Flowers is set at a height of 12,000 feet above sea level. Most trekkers prefer to club Hemkund Sahib Valley of Flowers treks. If you club these treks, you’re not only able to visit the sacred religious site, but also able to see hundreds of species of alpine flowers blooming in the valley.

Both Hemkund and Valley of Flowers remain open between May and September. From October to May, these destinations are cut-off from other parts of Uttarakhand due to heavy snowfall. In 1982, Valley of Flowers was declared a National Park, and since then it has been one of the most visited trekking destinations in the country. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A trek to the Hemkund Sahib takes you through scenic, mesmerizing trails throughout. You will not only pass through dense alpine forests, but also watch snow clad mountains setting the perfect backdrop for your trek.

From Govindghat, the starting point, it’s a 14 km trek to Ghangaria, which is the basecamp for both Hemkund Sahib and Valley of Flowers. This part of the trek can be covered on dolis or mules. There’s also a helicopter service from Govindghat to Ghangaria. The first 3 km of the trek are pretty steep.

From Ghangaria, you can only trek to the Valley of Flowers. It’s a 4 km trek to the Valley, and isn’t very steep. Once you’ve soaked in the mesmerizing beauty of the valley, you head down to Ghangaria to take rest overnight. The next morning, you can start your journey for a 6 km trek to Hemkund Sahib. This is a steep trek and it’s better to plan it under the guidance of seasoned trekkers.

What’s the Hemkund Sahib trek difficulty level?

While planning a trek, one of the most important things is to consider its difficulty. When it comes to Hemkund Sahib trek difficulty, it’s a not-so-difficult trek for most part. However, the last 6 km of the trek are very steep, and can be way more challenging than the nearby Valley of Flowers trek. In order to reach Hemkund Sahib, you need to start the trek from Govindghat, which is about 14 km from the basecamp, Ghangaria.

 

After starting from Govindghat, you will come across a steep upward slope for the first 3 km. The rest of the journey till Ghangaria is pretty straightforward with snowy mountains in the backdrop and beautiful streams passing by. You can even choose to cover these 14 km on mules or dolis. A helicopter service can also take you from Govindghat to Ghangaria.

As compared to the Valley of Flowers from Ghangaria, Hemkund Sahib is a lot more challenging. The 6 km journey is very steep, and it’s highly recommended to let experienced trekkers plan the trip. This is even more important if you’re planning a visit in monsoon season or after it, since heavy rains can leave the roads damaged to some extent.

 

For elderlies, ponies are available from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib. If you visit during or post the monsoon season, don’t miss the Brahma Kamal flower blooming in Hemkund Lake.

Most trekkers plan to combine Hemkund Sahib trek with Valley of Flowers. The 20 km trek begins from Govindghat, which is 14 km from the basecamp, Ghangaria. What’s the Hemkund Sahib altitude?

The trekking route from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib is full of snowy mountains, dense alpine forests and waterfalls. Along with the Valley of Flowers, it’s one of the most beautiful treks in the country. At 14,200 feet, Hemkund Sahib altitude makes it a really steep journey, especially in the last 6 km of the trek.

 

It’s worth mentioning that during monsoon season, road conditions can be even more challenging. Closer to Hemkund Sahib, the Valley of Flowers is located at an altitude of 12,000 feet. It’s not so steep, and a journey to the valley is often clubbed with the sacred Sikh religious destination. Both these destinations are open only from May to October.

 

Hemkund Sahib Altitude

 

Many trekkers planning a visit to Hemkund Sahib consider its difficulty level. Since the flowers are in full bloom during monsoon season, most people prefer this period to plan a visit. However, heavy rainfall can cause road blockages and toughen the conditions. At a height of 5,500 feet, the journey starts from Govindghat. 14 km from here, a small village called Ghangaria serves as the basecamp. It’s set at an altitude of 10,200 feet.

Out of 20 km, about 12 km of the trek to Hemkund Sahib is pretty steep. However, you can get mules and dolis from Govindghat. This makes it easier for elderlies and kids to plan the journey. A helicopter service is also available from Govindghat to Ghangaria, post which you can take a mule or doli.
