What are the preparations for Valley of Flowers?
Set at a height of 12,000 feet, a trek to the Valley of Flowers isn’t very difficult. Moreover, our bodies are capable of adjusting to the lack of oxygen on both short-term and long-term basis. It’s still important to make some preparations for Valley of Flowers to be on the safe side and enjoy a good trekking experience.
While planning a trek, there are certain things that need to be considered. The most important of them is the supply of oxygen. When you reach high altitude, lack of oxygen can cause problems. This happens because the air gets thinner and the hemoglobin in our body isn’t able to carry as much oxygen to blood cells.
Preparations for Valley of Flowers
Valley of Flowers is not a very difficult trek, and is even suitable for first-time trekkers. Since it falls in the category of moderate treks, the trail has a fairly well laid-out path. Only the first 3 km from Govindghat and 3 km before Ghangaria are pretty steep. Though water is available throughout the trail, you should still carry your own supply.
Generally, seasoned trekkers plan the route in a way that you need to cover about 9 km within a 6-hour period. However, terrain can play a big role, especially if you’re visiting the valley in July, which is the peak season. On average, you have to walk approximately 1.5 km per hour.
You can easily train yourself to run for 3 kms in 30 minutes. Try the schedule given below. It has been created by one of our seasoned trekkers. Never forget to do some stretching exercises before you start the program.
- First Week – 10 minute brisk walk, followed by 10 minute jog and 10 min slow walk
- Second Week – 5 minute brisk walk, followed by 15 minutes jog and 5 minute slow walk
- Third Week – 5 minute brisk walk, followed by 15 minute jog and 5 minute slow walk
- Fourth Week – 5 minute brisk walk, followed by 25 minute jog
