Chandratal Lake Trek is a moderate trek with the scope of varying the duration of the trek. You can trek to Chandratal Lake via Hampta Pass or you can drive to Kunzum Pass then trek down to Chandratal Lake. Kunzum Pass is the high altitude pass on Manali Kaza road after Rohtang Pass.

Brief Itinerary Chandratal Lake Trek

Day 1: Report at Manali Trekking Camp Prini and drive to Jobri (9, 800 ft) & trek to Chika Manali Camp(10,400 ft)

Day 2: Trek from Chika Camp  – Balu ka Ghera Camp (11,900 ft) (5 hrs)

Day 3: Trek from Balu ka Gera  corss Hampta Pass and trek down to Sia Goru Camp

Day 4: Trek from Sia Goru to Chatru  (4 hrs) and Drive to Chandratal Lake(14,100 ft) (70 kms)

Day 5: Drive from Chandra tal to Manali via Rohtang Pass (13,052 ft)

Detailed Itinerary Chandratal Lake Trek

Day 1: Report at Manali Trekking Camp Prini after briefing session drive to Jobri and Trek to Chika Camp. 

Report at Manali Trekking Camp in Prini and we will have our briefing session, we will drive to to Jobri via the Allain Duhangan Hydro Power Plant road which have 36 curves and takes around One and half to reach Jobri. We will start the trek to Chikka our first campsite on Chandratal Lake via Hampta Pass trek. Initial part of the trek goes through thick forest of Oak trees and then once you cross a big boulder you enter open valleys. On left you will see a big rock face Bhrigu Lake is just above that. After trekking for another hour you will reach our camp. It takes around 2 hours to reach Chikka. Overnight camp at Chika.

Day 2: Trek from Chika (10,400 ft) – Balu ka Ghera (11,900 ft) (5 hrs)

Today’s trek starts with Chika nalah crossing and then gradual ascent to Jwara Nalah which gives a thrilling experience of River Crossing in ice cold water. While trekking we will be able to see the spectacular Dhauladhar range in the background and once we take right turn after river crossing Indrasan peak in front. We will have our packed lunch after the Jwara Nala with just an hour more to our today’s campsite Balu Ka Gera. Balu Ka Gera is a beautiful camp with full small streams across the entire campsite.

Day 3: Trek from Balu ka Gera to Hampta Pass Summit at 14100 ft and trek downhill to Sia Goru Campsite.  (8-9 hrs)

Today we will crossing Hampta Pass and entering into Spiti Valley Himachal which is home to Chandratal Lake Trek. As we start our trek with an hours you will have to trek through boulders brought down by snow. The Hampta pass trekking trail is marked by Cairns “The small stack of stones” which you will notice on your trek are used to mark the route where there is no visible trail and the rule is that from one cairns you should see the other one on trekking trail. From Hampta Pass you can see the Indrasan Peak and its gigantic glacier. Today’s trek will take us approximately 8hrs to reach Siagoru. Once you cross Hampta Pass Weather is drastically changed as you enter in to rain shadow area of Spiti Valley.  The ascent on this part of the Hampta Pass trek will be moderate.

Day 4: Trek from Sia Goru (12,900 ft) – Chatru (11,000 ft) (4 hrs) and Drive to Chandra Tal (14,100 ft) (70 kms)

Excitement level is high as you will going to Chandratal Lake today. We start early crossing river from Indrasan Glacier which ice cold  and crossing Ice Cold stream is common and all trekker should know How to cross them. After river crossing we trek downhill to Chatru which will take around 4 hours. Our cabs will be waiting for us at Chatru and then we drive to Chandratal Lake.  “Chandratal” meaning the Moon Lake and is named so because of its growing shape. The sweet water lake is in all directions 2.5 km spacious. It is the birthplace of Chandra River which unites with Bhaga River to form Chandrabhaga River which enters in Pakistan as Chenab. The massive mountains of the Pir Panjal and Spiti ranges dominate the entire landscape during the Hampta Pass Trek till the camp site at Chatru. From Chatru we drive to Chandratal Lake beside Chandra River and CB Ranges and also the magnificent Bada Sigri Glacier.

Day 5: Drive from Chandra tal to Manali via Rohtang Pass (13,052 ft)

Get up early morning to get the early monring views of Chandratal Lake and then have your breakfast and we leave for Manali via the Rohtang Pass. Our  wonderful experience of trekking Chandratal Lake Camping comes to end.

Fitness Required for Chandratal Lake Trek

Chandratal Lake is situated at an altitude of around 4400 meters or 14000 ft which is high altitude. Chandratal Lake Trek with Hampta Pass is a moderate level trek. You require a good physical fitness and if you are not physical active then we recommend book Chadratal Lake Trek with Hampta Pass two month in advance and follow the given schedule for two months. This will help you during the trek otherwise you will struggle a lot and you will not be able to enjoy the trek. Chandratal Lake Trek Difficulty Level is moderate only and if you prepare well you will feel that the Chandratal Lake Trek Difficulty Level is of easy category.

Follow this training schedule for trekking fitness required.
Week 1: Start with 10 minute of brisk walk and then jog for 10 minutes and finally 10 minutes of easy walk.
Week 2: 5 minutes of brisk walk 15 minutes of jog 5 minutes of easy walk
Week 3: 5 minutes of brisk walk 15 minutes of jog 5 minutes of easy walk
Week 4: 5 minutes of brisk walk and jog for 25 min and cool down your body

Chandratal Lake trek with Hampta Pass is total around 30 Kms of Trek and 160 Kms of drive. Normally our trek are designed in such a way that we reach our camp by lunch time and on an average trekking distance is roughly 6-7  Kms each day and it takes around 6 hours by an average trekker to cover that distance. During Chandratal Lake trek with Hampta Pass we trek for 4 km on day 1, 9 Kms on Day 2, 9 to 10 Kms on Day 3, 5 Kms on Day 4.

To reach Chandratal Lake by car you need to reach Manali and from there you get permit for Lahaul and Spiti. We suggest that you take one night rest at Manali to get acclimatize to high altitude and then next day drive to Chhatru or Batal where you can stay at our Chandratal Lake Camp then next visit Chandratal Lake by Car and return to Manali.

If you are going to Chandratal Lake by Car and you also want to enjoy short trek then Trek from Kunzum Pass to Chandratal Lake is the perfect fit for you. Trek from Kunzum Pass to Chandratal Lake is short downhill trek and takes around 3 hours to reach.

What if trek is cancelled at the last moment due to ‘force majeure’?
All the arrangements for the tour are pre-planned and prepaid.
We will offer you alternate trek options of similar value depending upon the weather conditions if a trek is cancelled due to ‘force majeure’. In case of non-completion of the tour due to any reason whatsoever there will not be any refund for any unutilized services.

Between 14-24 Day :- 70% of Trek/Tour cost will be refunded.
Between 14-08 Days :- 50% of Trek/Tour cost will be refunded.

We will reschedule your trek without any extra charge if this is conveyed to us in writing ateast 1 month before the trek starting date.
Between 07-24 Days before start of the trek :- 30% of Trek/Tour cost  will be charged for rescheduling.
Less than 7 days:- 100% of Trek/Tour cost  will be charged for rescheduling.

Manali
Manali is the base location for our Hampta Pass trek. Our meeting point in Manali is the Government bus stand opposite the mall road.  We will pick you up at 11:00 AM in the morning and start the drive to jobri. The entire drive from Manali to Jobri takes around 1 Hour.

Reaching Manali by Road (Bus)
Manali is well connected with comfortable Volvo buses run by government and private operators. You can catch luxury and normal buses to Manali which are available from ISBT Kashmiri Gate in delhi. The journey takes around 12-14 hours.

Reaching Manali by Air
Closest airport to Manali is Kullu Airport which is well connected via flights from Delhi. The distance between Kullu and Manali is around 1 hour. To check flights available check makemytrip.com/yatra.com/easmytrip etc.
