A lot of trekkers visit Chandratal from Manali. Though the distance is approximately 140 km, it does not mean that the journey is easy or short. It can easily take about 7-8 hours from Manali to Chandratal. It’s better to depart early in the morning and make sure you reach Chandratal on time. The journey includes a very steep ascent to the famous Rohtang Pass.
On the way, you need to tackle heavy traffic going towards the top. This is followed by a gruelling journey on the Gramphoo Batal Pass, and another difficult ascent towards Kunzum Pass. Last but not the least, you need to go through 14 km of dirt road, which is barely enough for a car. Thus, it’s highly recommended to plan your trip under the guidance of experienced professionals.
When you start from Manali, you need to take the Leh highway, and move towards Rohtang Pass. Until you’re near Rohtang Pass, road conditions will seem good. After this, you will have to face some challenging roads until Gramphoo. Once you reach Gramphoo, there will be a dirt road on the right. You’ll also be able to see a sign welcoming your arrival to Spiti Valley. On this road, you need to continue till Batal. The road is full of dirt with many water crossings.
On reaching Batal, you need to continue towards the famous Kunzum Pass. Just before Kunzum Pass, there’s another dirt road on the left. You’ll see a road sign welcoming you on Chandratal Road.
