-British mountaineer Frank Smythe in 1931, when him and his team accidentally stumbled upon the Valley Of Flowers after returning from an expedition to Mount Kamet.
The Valley Of Flowers Trek is one of the most beautiful treks in the Himalayas, because when the snow cover melts, the sun shines, and the monsoon rains cleanse the mountainside, the flowers come out to play. The Valley is decked in a riot of colours as the diverse flora blooms, and it feels like the mountains are playing Holi.
The Valley of Flowers is an Indian national park, located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand at a height of around 3600 meters. It is renowned for its meadows of endemic alpine flowers and the variety of flora found there.
This richly diverse area is also home to many rare and endangered animals, including the Asiatic black bear, snow leopard, brown bear and blue sheep(bharal). The gentle landscape of the Valley of Flowers National Park complements the rugged mountain wilderness of the Nanda Devi National Park to the east.

Here’s a short itinerary of the Valley Of Flowers Trek:
Day 1: Drive from Haridwar–Govind Ghat (5,998 ft) via Joshimath (6,150 ft) and Devprayag (8-9 hrs);
Day 2: Trek from Govind Ghat (5,998 ft)–Ghangaria (10,003 ft) (14 kms, 5-6 hrs);
Day 3: Trek from Ghangaria (10,003 ft) – Valley Of Flowers (10,998 ft – 12,001 ft) and back. (5 kms one side/2-3 hrs);
Day 4: Trek from Ghangaria (10,003 ft) to Hemkund (14203 ft) and back to Ghangaria ( 6 kms and back) (3-4 hrs);
Day 5: Trek from Ghangaria (10,003 ft) – Govind Ghat (5,998 ft) (14 kms) (3-4 hrs);
Day 6: Drive back to Haridwar from Govind Ghat.
Detailed Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Drive from Haridwar to Govind Ghat (5,998 ft) via Joshimath (6,150 ft) and Devprayag (8-9 hrs)
We will pick you up early in the morning from Haridwar Railway station. There are many ways to reach Haridwar, either by train, bus or by air. We drive to Govindghat from Haridwar via Joshimath and Devprayag. Devprayag is a holy city, being the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers, from here the rivers unite to become the holy Ganges. We arrive at Joshimath by the evening and check into a hotel. We either have dinner and stay overnight at Joshimath, or if conditions permit, we’ll try and reach Govind Ghat and stay in a hotel there. Make sure to get a proper night’s sleep, because tomorrow, our trek to the Valley Of Flowers begins!
Day 2: Trek from Govind Ghat (5,998 ft) – Ghangaria (10,003 ft) (14 km, 5-6 hrs)
At Govind Ghat, there is a gradual ascent along a well maintained pilgrim trail to Ghangaria. Upon our arrival at Ghangaria, we check into a hotel. Explore the surroundings in the evening, have dinner and stay overnight at the hotel.
Day 3: Trek from Ghangaria (10,003 ft) – Valley Of Flowers (10,998 ft – 12,001 ft) and back (5 km one way/2-3 hrs)
Today, after an early breakfast from Ghangharia, we start our trek towards the Valley Of Flowers (3,658 m). The valley is an enchanting sight with an impressive array of rare wildflowers like geraniums, primulas, etc.The valley is 10 km long, 2 km wide, and is divided by the Pushpawati stream, into which several tiny streams and waterfalls merge. If the skies are clear, you might be able to see Bhyundar Khal, Rataban (6166 m), and Gauri Parbat (6708 m)! After absorbing the beauty of the Valley Of Flowers, our souls satisfied, we trek back to Ghangaria. Dinner, then overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 4: Trek from Ghangaria (10,003 ft) to Hemkund (14,203 ft) and back to Ghangaria (6 km one way)(3-4 hrs)
In the morning, we trek to Hemkund Saheb (4,432 m) from Ghangaria. The climb is quite steep.

Hemkunt Parbat is located there,
Whence seven peaks are located.
In the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs, the Sikh Guru Gobind Singh recounted that in a previous life, he meditated on the shores of a lake surrounded by seven snowcapped peaks, and this area is now recognized as Hemkund. Its exploration and discovery was undertaken in the 1930s and 1940s by dedicated Sikh devotees, who established a Gurudwara here. Since then, the yatra route is thronged with thousands of pilgrims every year. After meditating on the calm shores of Hemkund, we start back in the late afternoon trek for Ghangaria. With the majority of our trekking done, we have a relaxing dinner and a peaceful overnight sleep at the hotel.
Day 5: Trek from Ghangaria (10,003 ft) – Govind Ghat (5,998 ft) (14 km)(3-4 hrs)
We trek back to Govind Ghat, then from there we drive to Joshimath. Upon arrival at Govindghat/Joshimath(depends on how far we can go), we check into a hotel. As for the rest of the day, you’re free to explore this picturesque area 🙂 .
Day 6: Drive back to Haridwar from Govind Ghat.
With an early morning start, we drive back to Rishikesh/Haridwar. We have lunch en-route. We reach Rishikesh/Haridwar by the evening. Here, we say our goodbyes to you, and we hope you leave with a plethora of vivid and colourful memories 🙂 !

Fitness Required for Valley Of Flowers Trek
At high altitudes, as the air gets thinner, oxygen becomes less abundant. The saturation percentage of haemoglobin with oxygen determines the amount of oxygen in our blood. After the human body reaches 2,100 m (7,000 feet) above sea level, the level of oxygen in our haemoglobin begins to plummet. However, the human body has both short-term and long-term adaptations to altitude that allow it to partially compensate for the lack of oxygen.

The Valley Of Flowers falls into the category of easy treks. The trek is along a fairly well laid out path, and has very few steep ascents or descents. Water is available throughout the trail.
But if you’re still thinking of having the best possible Himalayan trekking experience, then it’s always better to be prepared. Here is the training schedule to prepare for the trek.
Our treks are generally planned in a way, that on an average, you cover around 9 km in about 6 hours, although there may be slight variation depending on the terrain. This works out to roughly 1.5 km per hour, which is the equivalent of walking at 6 km per hour in the plains.
You can train yourself to run 3 km in 30 minutes, as per the schedule given below. Remember to always start your training program with stretching and warm up exercises.
Follow this training schedule to attain the basic trekking fitness required.
Week 1: Start with 10 minutes of brisk walk, and then jog for 10 minutes, and then end with 10 minutes of easy walking;
Week 2: 5 minutes of brisk walk, then 15 minutes of jog, then 5 minutes of easy walking;
Week 3: 5 minutes of brisk walk, then 15 minutes of jog, then 5 minutes of easy walking;
Week 4: 5 minutes of brisk walk, jog for 25 minutes, then cool down your body.

How much we have to trek each day?
Normally our treks are designed in such a way that we reach our camp by lunch time. On an average, trekking distance is roughly 6-7 km each day, and it takes around 6 hours for an average trekker to cover that distance.

How does the monsoon season affects the valley of flowers trek?
The Valley Of Flowers trek is possible only during the months of July & August, which are the months during which the monsoon is in full swing. If the road gets closed due to a landslide, the Border Roads Organisation(BRO) usually opens it up as soon as the rain stops.
What will happen if the trek is extended because of landslides or any other reasons?
If we have to extend the trek because of the reasons which are beyond our control, then additional charges may apply.
Who will lead and who all will go along with us ?
All our treks are led by certified & experienced Trek Leaders/Guides. We believe in sustainable adventure and eco-tourism, which in effect means that our teams are locally sourced. Other than a trek leader in our team, we will have local guides, a cook, helpers and porters.
How big are the groups ?
We make it a point not to have more than 15 people in a trekking group, because we believe that the best way to enjoy adventure is in small sustainable groups.
What is the minimum number of Trekkers required for Fixed Departures ?
Our Fixed departures are guaranteed and a promise to our customer, that even if there is a single trekker, we will proceed with the trek at a loss.
I am the only girl in a trek, is it safe ?
We generally have a ratio of Male:Female of about 2:1. Mountains on the whole are much safer than the plains. Lots of solo female trekkers join us and we make it a point that only female trekkers share the tent with other female trekkers.
What things do we need to carry for the trek?

Can I offload my backpack on a mule/porter? What are the charges for the same?
Ideally and always, when you are in the mountains, you should be self-sufficient and you should carry your own backpack. However, the charges to offload a backpack of roughly 9 kg or less is about Rs. 250 per day.
Which type of shoes should I buy?
Good trekking shoes with an appropriate fit are a must.
What level of fitness is expected from the trekkers?

What are the meals during a trek?
We serve a wholesome and nutritious breakfast, lunch, dinner and evening snacks. The food is vegetarian, and it is preferable, as vegetarian food is easy to digest at high altitudes.
Is the water on the trek safe?
The advantage of trekking the Himalayas is that your trekking route is filled with fresh Himalayan streams. Your trek leader/guide will direct you to places from where you can fill clean water. We recommend this water, but in case you are unsure, you can carry water purifying tablets with you.
What type of vehicles are used for transportation ?
We use Sumo/Xylo/Tempo for transportation.
What do you do if we encounter a medical emergency during the trek?
Our team at Renok is trained in handling high altitude emergencies. Apart from being trained mountaineers, they bring a wealth of experience in dealing with high altitude illnesses. We carry First aid kits and oxygen cylinders with us, and in case of other medical emergencies, we rescue the trekker till the road head. If any additional cost of evacuation is incurred, it is borne by the trekker. Also, before the trek it is your responsibility to get a medical fitness checkup by a doctor which certifies you are fit enough for this trek.
Can we change the itinerary?
Renok Adventures LLP reserves the right to change the itinerary depending upon the weather conditions and other factors. If extra cost is incurred due to rescheduling the trekker is informed beforehand and extra cost if any is borne by the trekker. Please note that we operate treks in some of the most remote regions and harshest conditions where unforeseen events may force us to change the itinerary. In such cases, we or your trek leader will suggest the best alternative similar to your original itinerary.
Can you customise the Valley Of Flowers Trek?
Yes, the Valley Of Flowers Trek can be customised. If you would like to travel independently, you are invited to choose any of the trips at your convenient time for any number of people. The cost for private customised trips is fixed on the basis of group size, trek area, duration and trek style.
What if the trek is cancelled at the last moment due to ‘force majeure’?
All the arrangements for the tour are pre-planned and prepaid.
We will offer you alternate trek options of similar value, if a trek is cancelled due to ‘force majeure’, depending upon the weather conditions. In case of non-completion of the tour due to any reason whatsoever, there will not be any refund for any unutilised services.

Between 14-24 Day :- 70% of Trek/Tour cost will be refunded.

What is your Rescheduling Policy?
We will reschedule your trek without any extra charge if this is conveyed to us in writing at least 1 month before the starting date of the trek.
Between 07-24 Days before start of the trek :- 30% of Trek/Tour cost will be charged for rescheduling.
Less than 7 days:- 100% of Trek/Tour cost will be charged for rescheduling.
Haridwar is the base location for our Valley of Flowers trek, not Govind Ghat or Joshimath. Our meeting point in Haridwar is the railway station. We will pick you up at 6:00 AM in the morning, then start the drive to Govind Ghat. The entire drive from Haridwar to Govindghat takes around 10 hours.
