Hemkund Sahib is one of the most sacred religious sites for the Sikh community. Located on the shores of Hemkund Lake, this place marks the union of Guru Gobind Singh with God after years of meditation in the previous birth. The place was described in Guru Gobind Singh’s autobiography, which allowed two devoted Sikhs to discover the place. This scenic religious site has also been talked about in Hindu mythology. According to legends, Lakshman spent some time in Hemkund Sahib.
Hemkund Sahib Trek Distance
Approximately a 20 km trek from Govindghat, Hemkund is a scenic, not-so-difficult trek near the famous Valley of Flowers. The trek starts from Govindghat, which is the gateway to Lakshman Ganga Valley and Bhyundar. In addition to this, Govindghat is also the right place to catch a bus for Badrinath.
On the trek, you come across dense forests of rhododendron and pine trees. Alpine flowers can be seen all around in abundance. You can also notice the flowing waters of river Lakshman Ganga. After a 14 km trek, you reach Ghangaria, the basecamp for Hemkund and Valley of Flowers. From here, it’s a steep 6 km trek to Hemkund Sahib.
On reaching Hemkund, many people are fascinated by the scenic beauty of Hemkund Lake. With a 2 km circumference, the clear water mirrors snowy peaks of Saptarishis. From July to October, you can notice thin ice floating on the surface. The national flower of Uttarakhand, Brahma Kamal, can be seen in the Hemkund Sahib Lake.
