Valley of Flowers, one of the most scenic destinations in the country, is an 18 km long trek. It’s quite steep in the first 3 km and 11-14 km. The trek to the Valley of Flowers starts from Govindghat. The basecamp, Ghangaria, is at 14 km. Recently, a helicopter service was started from Govindghat to Ghangaria. However, the functioning of the service depends on weather conditions, which may not be favourable during the peak season, i.e., July and August.
Govindghat to Ghangaria
Valley of Flowers is not a very difficult trek. But since the peak season is during the rains, road conditions may be slightly rough, which may lead to blockages. Due to this, it’s better to plan your trek under the supervision of experienced trekkers. Govindghat is located at about 5,500 feet. A 14 km long journey takes you to the base camp of the trek, Ghangaria. It’s located at about 10,200 feet. The Valley of Flowers is at 12,000 feet above sea level. Due to this, the last leg of the journey isn’t very steep.

Ponies are also allowed between Govindghat to Valley of Flowers. However, since the valley is a preserved biological reserve, ponies aren’t allowed beyond Ghangaria. Trekking is the only way to cover the last 4 km of the journey. Luckily, palanquins and doli’s are available for elderlies and kids. But you also have to pay for the porters’ tickets.
