The trekking route from Govindghat to Hemkund Sahib is full of snowy mountains, dense alpine forests and waterfalls. Along with the Valley of Flowers, it’s one of the most beautiful treks in the country. At 14,200 feet, Hemkund Sahib altitude makes it a really steep journey, especially in the last 6 km of the trek.
It’s worth mentioning that during monsoon season, road conditions can be even more challenging. Closer to Hemkund Sahib, the Valley of Flowers is located at an altitude of 12,000 feet. It’s not so steep, and a journey to the valley is often clubbed with the sacred Sikh religious destination. Both these destinations are open only from May to October.
Hemkund Sahib Altitude
Many trekkers planning a visit to Hemkund Sahib consider its difficulty level. Since the flowers are in full bloom during monsoon season, most people prefer this period to plan a visit. However, heavy rainfall can cause road blockages and toughen the conditions. At a height of 5,500 feet, the journey starts from Govindghat. 14 km from here, a small village called Ghangaria serves as the basecamp. It’s set at an altitude of 10,200 feet.
Out of 20 km, about 12 km of the trek to Hemkund Sahib is pretty steep. However, you can get mules and dolis from Govindghat. This makes it easier for elderlies and kids to plan the journey.
