Overview of Leh Ladakh trip in February

From mid-January to end-February, winter in Leh-Ladakh is at its peak. Most travellers avoid visiting the region during this period. However, if you’re an adventure enthusiast or a hardcore backpacker, you may be interested in seeing the beauty of raw nature in the month of February. Though highways from Manali and Srinagar get blocked due to heavy snowfall, internal roads remain open and give you a chance to explore famous tourist attractions, such as Pangong Tso, Nubra Valley, Khardung La Pass and more. A Leh Ladakh trip in February needs to be planned carefully. We thought we’d give you some advice and help you out.

Leh Ladakh Trip in February

As mentioned earlier, the main Leh city stays connected to most tourist attractions. Therefore, you can indulge in local sightseeing. However, bad weather and road conditions can cause some serious concerns. You need to plan everything properly, and should follow certain rules to ensure you are safe while having a good time.

Take a Flight – Leh-Ladakh is connected via direct flights from major cities, such as Delhi, Chandigarh and Srinagar. Since the highways are closed in February, taking a flight is the only option. If you’re planning a road trip to Leh-Ladakh, it will have to take a backseat until roads clear, and Leh Ladakh weather allows you to drive through the scenic locations.

Book Accommodation in the Main City – In the month of February, you’ll have to skip any plans of staying in Nubra Valley or night camping beside Pangong Tso lake. You should book accommodation for all days in the main city. This saves you from the trouble of getting stuck in the middle of nowhere. While visiting tourist attractions in Nubra Valley and other areas, leave early in the morning to reach Leh by evening.

Leh Ladakh temperature in February is somewhere around 1.5 degree celsius to minus 14 degree celsius. Heavy snowfall can block roads without any warning. Therefore, it’s better to reach Leh by evening to stay over in the main city at night.

Plan Something Basic – Though you might be excited about exploring Leh-Ladakh, it’s better to leave complicated routes for another time. In February, you should plan basic tours, including sightseeing options in Nubra Valley, Tso Moriri and Pangong Tso. It’s good to avoid areas like Chushul route, Horla, Marsimik La and Charchagan La. Getting permits for these places is also difficult in February. However, this period is ideal for a Chadar trek, a walk over the frozen Zanskar river.

Keep Buffer Days – While travelling in Leh-Ladakh in the month of February, you should keep a couple of buffer days. This allows you to change plans in case of emergencies caused due to bad weather or road conditions. A two-day buffer period is highly recommended.

A Leh Ladakh trip in February can be quite difficult. However, it allows you to explore the region at your own pace. With less crowds, you’ll be able to witness the true beauty of Leh-Ladakh.
