While some people don’t consider it to be the best time to visit Leh-Ladakh, most of tourist activities happen in July. According to seasoned trekkers, July is one of the best months to visit Leh-Ladakh. The entire region looks colourful with various shades colouring the landscapes, and attracting tourists from around the world. Though people continue to visit Leh-Ladakh in August and September, a Leh Ladakh trip in July is exciting, refreshing, and thrilling. The kind of enthusiasm you notice during this period is unmatched.

Leh Ladakh Trip in July

All routes to Ladakh are open in July, including the Manali – Leh and Srinagar – Leh highways. Even internal roads leading to Nubra Valley, Tso Moriri, and Pangong Tso are easily accessible. Since July is considered to be the peak season, guesthouses, hotels, and touristy activities are operational. If you visit Ladakh in July, you won’t experience any problems when looking for a decent accommodation. You’ll also be able to rent a bike or book a private or shared taxi.

Ladakh in July Monsoon

It’s worth mentioning that monsoon arrives in the Himalayas in the month of July. During this period, several valleys around Kashmir, Lahaul, and Manali start receiving rainfall. At times, it can be quite intense, and may cause landslides. However, you’ll encounter most rain on your way to Leh. Since Ladakh is a rain-shadow region, it either receives very less rainfall or no rainfall at all. Thus, once you reach the destination, Leh Ladakh weather won’t cause any major issues.

The top of the high altitude passes may receive some rainfall. This can block the road, and cause some trouble. However, the Indian Army restores connectivity pretty quickly. It’s recommended to plan your trip in the first half of the month, since the intensity of the monsoon increases as the month progresses. The overall Leh Ladakh temperature in July stays between 25 degree celsius to 10 degree celsius, which is warm and pleasant.

Driving in July

For a Leh Ladakh trip in July, you need to be careful about driving through water crossings, small streams and slush. In several areas, rain can cause some serious damage. Zoji La on the Srinagar – Leh highway and Rohtang Pass on the Manali – Leh highway often cause problems for tourists. Heavy rains can instantly wash away some parts of the narrow roads leading to Leh. It can be a challenge to maneuver your vehicle through such conditions. Thus, it’s good to book a tour package with a reputed service provider to ensure your safety.

As mentioned earlier, landslides are also a serious concern. Therefore, it’s better to keep a couple of buffer days in your itinerary. In case a highway or internal road gets shut down, you’ll be able to plan your days accordingly. Tour operators have a team of seasoned trekkers and hardcore backpackers who’re familiar with the rugged terrain. It’s better to get in touch with a tour operator to discuss your requirements.
