Overview of Leh Ladakh trip in March

While some believe September to October to be the best time to visit Leh-Ladakh, others want to skip the crowds and plan a vacation during March. In this month, you can experience Ladakh’s authentic culture and interact with the locals. Each time of the year has its own set of advantages, but a Leh Ladakh trip in March offers something more.

If you’re looking for a chance to trek and camp, witness the beauty of raw nature, and experience Ladakh’s festivals, you’ve come to the right place. In this post, we’ve tried to answer your doubts about a Ladakh trip in March.

Leh Ladakh Trip in March

Without a doubt, March is one of the coldest months in Leh-Ladakh. You’ll be able to see the beginnings of fresh greenlands. Since it’s not the peak tourist season, you’ll be able to indulge in a wide range of activities without too many tourists. Irrespective of Leh Ladakh weather, you’ll see numerous Ladakhis in the main city, going about their daily life and chores.

One of the biggest disadvantages of planning a trip in March is the shortage of fresh vegetables and fruits. You can only find leafy greens grown in local greenhouses. However, most guesthouses and hotels stock up a good amount to ensure tourists don’t face any problems.

From the month of March, Leh Ladakh temperature starts dropping, and ranges somewhere between 6 degree celsius to minus 6 degree celsius. During daytime, the weather stays sunny, while nights can be frosty and cold. The highways from Manali and Srinagar remain closed, and the only way to reach Leh is via flight. You won’t be able to camp in Nubra Valley or Pangong. However, some authentic Ladakhi festivals are organised in this month. Some of these include Stok Guru Tsechu, Matho nagrang and Yargon Tungshak.

Leh Ladakh Trip in March

Due to Leh Ladakh temperature, March isn’t a good time to climb peaks. The entire region looks like a thick blanket of snow, slowly melting away. However, some reputed tour operators organise and conduct tours under the supervision of experienced guides and seasoned trekkers.

It’s worth mentioning that usual trekking routes remain fine, with some snow on high altitude passes. In March, the treks from Ladakh to Nubra have a lot of snow, and it’s better to visit the valley in a private taxi. However, if you’ve been to Ladakh before in the summer season, this will be a completely new and refreshing experience.

In order to visit Pangong Tso in March, you can get permits from the Government. If you book a package tour, your travel agent will handle all these things for you. You’ll also be able to stay in a decent accommodation in Leh city and Pangong. For transportation, a shared taxi with 5-6 people in the group can save you a lot of trouble, and even help cut costs.

With a reputed tour operator, a Leh Ladakh trip in March not only allows you to explore the region at your own pace, but also ensures safety.
