Kunzum Pass is a steep mountain pass at an altitude of 4,590 m (15,059 ft) above the sea level, stationed on the eastern Kunzum Range of the Himalayas. The pass connects Lahual and Spiti Valleys in Himachal.It is one of India’s top-notch motorable mountain passes. Spiti Valley Road is the highest point.
The road on top of the pass is not a road but a track of dirt leading up to the top of the hill linking Lahaul Valley and Kullu Valley with the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. The exterior of this shingle road is time after the time loses, especially along the sides of the road. It makes necessary to drive carefully and slow down whenever approaching an oncoming car.
The expedition is absolutely worth it. Do not forget your camera at the top of the pass proposes the spectacular views of Bara-Sigri glacier, the second longest glacier in the world, Chandra-Bhaga Mountain and Spiti Valley are also visible from the pass. Besides the scenic view of the suburb, Kunzum Pass has got a temple of Goddess Durga at its topmost point.
Avalanches and heavy snowfalls can at times block some chunks of the road and can be utmost critical due to recurrent blobs of ice. It is the only motorable route connecting Lahaul Valley on the western side of the pass with Spiti Valley on the eastern side.
